An investigation claims the party accepted illicit contributions. Specifically, it suggests foreign money funded three opinion polls commissioned by Reform UK. Under UK electoral law, foreign donations to political parties are strictly prohibited.
Party leader Nigel Farage denies all accusations. He maintains that no illegal activities took place. Farage stated the party is a victim of “entrapment.” Reform UK has also announced an internal investigation into the matter.
These new revelations significantly overshadow the party’s annual conference in Birmingham. Farage had hoped his address at the event would help restore the party’s declining popularity. Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s National Rally, is also slated to speak.
The investigation alleges that two top Reform figures arranged for a US company to pay over £30,000 for the polls. Unbeknownst to them, the purported donors were undercover reporters. They represented an independent journalistic organization.
James Orr, the party’s head of policy, strongly disputes the claims. He asserted that Reform UK was not involved in commissioning the polls. Orr clarified that it was a “public poll arranged by an independent person” and immediately published. Therefore, he concluded, it could not constitute an illegal donation.
The populist party’s recent dip in public support predates this current scandal. Allegations from the ongoing Reform UK foreign donation probe further compound these difficulties. Past controversies have also plagued Reform UK. Moreover, a recent shift in Labour party leadership has bolstered the opposition’s standing, further impacting Reform’s appeal.
Farage faces an ongoing parliamentary inquiry into a separate £5 million donation. This sum, received in 2024 from a crypto billionaire, Christopher Harborne, was reportedly undeclared. Farage argues the donation predates his election, thus exempting it from declaration requirements. This persistent scrutiny continues to affect his and the party’s standing. Despite these challenges, Reform UK achieved notable success in local elections held in May. Farage continues to express ambitions for a top political position.
