Jürgen Klopp has finally achieved his inaugural Klopp Germany win, marking a significant milestone in his tenure. His side secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Serbia in a recent Nations League fixture. This result, achieved after 47 days and three matches, prevents him from becoming the first Germany coach without a win in his initial three games.

Klopp expressed his satisfaction following the match. He told German public broadcaster ZDF, “We were outstanding when defending and when we had the ball. We simply played wonderful football.” The former Liverpool manager had raised eyebrows by selecting two distinct squads for the current extended international window.

Previously, Germany secured a fortunate draw against the Netherlands and suffered a surprising loss to Greece. These results came with a more senior group of players. Therefore, the task of igniting a performance fell to a younger, less experienced squad for the Thursday fixture in Munich.

The starting lineup featured an entirely new set of players, including debuts for goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and winger Derry Scherhant. Klopp had emphasized the need for these players to “develop without the top dogs.” While Urbig remained largely unchallenged, Bayern Munich teammate Tom Bischof made a significant impact.

Bischof netted the opening goal, his first for Germany in only his second national team appearance. Florian Wirtz, one of the few senior players present, had hit the post just before Bischof converted the rebound. “It’s indescribable,” Bischof shared after the game at Bayern’s Allianz Arena. “The stadium was on fire. I let it all out and was overjoyed.”

Germany’s recent run of tournament failures means a new era demands greater patience. Both within the country and internationally, there is an acceptance that Germany is no longer considered a top-tier football nation. Klopp acknowledged this perspective before the match, stating, “We’re not the Bayern Munich of European football. We’re a team that needs to find its footing.”

While one win against a limited Serbian team will not drastically alter this perception, the decisive nature of the performance impressed the new coach. Klopp praised the team’s effort, remarking, “I liked everything — the opening phase, the middle section, and the end. Our counter-pressing was off the charts.” He added that the team could “afford to take all the liberties and risks we want when we win the ball back together.”

The second half saw more players earning their first cap. Cologne winger Said El Mala and Brentford’s Vitaly Janelt made their Germany bows. Significantly, Celtic’s Mika Baur became the country’s 1,000th men’s international. Baur described the experience as “surreal,” highlighting it as a special moment for all involved.

Klopp likely identified several promising talents from this second-string lineup for future consideration. However, the performance of Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz proved particularly crucial. Wirtz, 23, scored Germany’s second goal, providing a calm and composed finish.

Despite struggling for consistent form in the Premier League and blowing hot and cold in his 47 caps for Germany, Wirtz showed flashes of his highly regarded talent. His performance suggested Klopp could revitalize the player who once shone at Bayer Leverkusen. “It was loads of fun,” Wirtz said, who later wore the captain’s armband. “Every single one of us gave it our all on the field… We were all fired up.”

Klopp’s immediate challenge involves identifying which players from his extensive pool can reliably lead Germany toward Euro 2028 and beyond. The team’s next fixture offers a chance for revenge against Greece in Thessaloniki on Sunday.
