The high-profile Cornell sexual assault lawsuit has gained renewed public attention. Satirist Toby Morton is utilizing a new online platform to highlight allegations against seven Cornell University students. This case concerns an alleged incident from 2024.

Morton’s website, TheCornell7.org, publicly names the accused individuals. It also collects personal data and photographs of those involved. He asserts his role as a satirist gives him unique freedom. “Nobody tells me I’ve gone too far,” he posted on Instagram regarding the site’s creation.

The accuser, identified as Jane Doe to protect her identity, filed her civil lawsuit in mid-September. She alleges a brutal sexual assault occurred in 2024. Her complaint names seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity.

She claims she was unconscious after being pressured to consume drugs and alcohol at the fraternity house. The alleged incident took place on Cornell’s campus in Ithaca, New York. Doe’s lawsuit contends that the university failed to adequately protect her.

Cornell had conducted an internal investigation following the initial incident. However, no charges were filed internally at that time. Since the lawsuit’s filing on September 16, the case has generated extensive commentary on social media.

Many commentators have criticized Cornell and the district attorney’s office. Others, by contrast, have expressed skepticism regarding the allegations. Consequently, the Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten has confirmed his office reopened the case.

He plans to present evidence to a grand jury. This decision follows significant public questions about the initial lack of criminal charges. Van Houten stated that his office is considering bringing criminal charges related to the incident.

However, he noted discrepancies between the civil complaint and Doe’s original police statement. Her statement to authorities two years ago did not allege she was drugged without her knowledge. Furthermore, she did not claim non-consensual sexual acts, he specified.

The Chi Phi chapter at Cornell was barred from campus after the alleged 2024 incident. Moreover, the woman who accused the men of sexual assault subsequently withdrew from Cornell University. Her attorney confirmed her departure from the institution.

One of the lawsuit’s most chilling allegations involves a Snapchat message. This message was reportedly sent to a Chi Phi group chat around 1:42 a.m. It allegedly invited members to a room to abuse Doe, who was heavily incapacitated by drugs and alcohol.

The lawsuit claims more men then entered the room. The assault allegedly continued for several hours until Doe lost consciousness. “There were so many people that could have prevented it and they didn’t. I’ve never seen anything like it,” attorney Thomas Giuffra stated.

Giuffra, who represents Jane Doe, also highlighted the disciplinary measures taken. Two of the seven accused fraternity members were expelled. The remaining individuals received lesser disciplinary actions. “Not one of these guys was arrested,” Giuffra emphasized.

The case has garnered significant attention from various public figures. US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, condemned what she described as a “culture of rape.” She attributed this to protection offered by elite institutions.

British actress Florence Pugh described the allegations as “horrific” on social media. She expressed strong support for the student involved. Pugh highlighted that colleges frequently fail women globally. Additionally, American actor Josh Gad criticized the perceived insufficient disciplinary consequences.

Gad, known for his voice work in Disney’s “Frozen,” argued that sexual violence should not be treated as a mistake. He called for greater accountability. The Cornell sexual assault controversy continues to unfold.
