The Karak church shooting in southern Jordan tragically claimed seven lives on Friday. This horrific attack occurred during a funeral procession at the Hammoud Greek Orthodox Church. Public security director Obaidallah Maaytah confirmed that another 34 individuals sustained injuries.

Two unidentified gunmen opened fire on mourners during the solemn ceremony. Their specific identities and motives remain unclear at this time. Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

A witness told state media that 150 to 200 people were present inside the church. The sheer number of attendees highlights the profound impact on the local community. Such violent gun attacks are notably rare within Jordan’s borders.

Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya unequivocally attributed the massacre to “extremists.” He indicated that authorities already possess the names of potential suspects. However, these identities would not be publicly disclosed immediately.

King Abdullah II swiftly condemned the “terrorist attack” on Karak. He vowed the “harshest retaliation” against those responsible. “We will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation,” the King declared, emphasizing Jordanian unity against divisive forces.

Government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani further confirmed that security forces have initiated a full probe. Meanwhile, international condemnation poured in for the brutal act. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families.

US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz called the news “devastating.” He highlighted a concerning global escalation of attacks against Christians, urging their immediate halt. Jordan is predominantly Muslim, with around 11.5 million people. Nevertheless, it supports a small Christian minority of several hundred thousand, particularly prominent in areas like Karak. The Karak church shooting underscores the vulnerabilities even in typically stable regions.
